Life in The Deer Ridge Lane

Photographed by Jake Shea

Perched atop Armonk’s rolling hills in Westchester, N.Y., this 12,000 sq ft home seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, embodying a blend of rustic, organic modernism – a design rooted in thoughtful sustainability. Comprising four barn-like structures interconnected by steel and glass, it stands as a testament to mindful construction. All the exterior stone used on the home originates from the property itself. The indigenous stone was set aside during the excavation process. Our team meticulously crafted veneers from the indigenous stone for the carriage house garage, fireplaces, and the rear exterior façade by breaking down indigenous boulders unearthed on-site. To maintain even further authenticity for the home, the beams and siding showcase weathered wood sourced from diverse locations across the Hudson Valley. Months were dedicated to locating recycled materials with matching patinas, salvaged from weathered barns, ensuring a cozy and welcoming ambiance despite the home’s grand scale.

The residence boasts a full walkout lower level fitted with a kitchenette, game & movie room, gym, and spa bath, all of which have views and access to a stunning infinity pool and an IPE deck. The home’s overall aesthetic seamlessly weaves together rustic and modern sensibilities, evident in elements like board-form concrete fireplaces, contemporary spotlights, and very specific applications of limewash and Tadelakt throughout. A standout technique that was used to create a charred and preserved wood finish is Shou Sugi Ban. This was applied in various areas of the home to enhance depth. Balancing the home’s minimalism with warmth was a fulfilling endeavor, resulting in spaces that harmoniously blend these contrasting yet complementary design elements. Statement work from notable artists including Banksy, Basquiat, Mr. Brainwash, David Yarrow, Pierce Meehan and Nick Veasey can be found throughout the residence and every piece of furniture was meticulously curated with accessibility and uniqueness in mind. The space is adorned with stunning vintage finds and handcrafted details that took almost two years to assemble.
